Otakyun! 2017

Otakyun! (OK) 2017 was held on December 2 – 3, at the exhibition centre in CityONE Megamall, Kuching. Sticking to the tradition of being held over two days, the idol-themed event drew in more than 2,000 visitors locally and internationally. The theme was chosen through a Facebook fanart competition which crowned Hirago the winner. Her design was then featured on the official OK 2017 merchandise sold at the event.
The specially invited cosplay guests were YUI and Ying Tze from Hong Kong and Malaysia respectively. YUI is known for her realistic cross-plays (cross-gender play) as one of her more famous works were of her cosplaying as Noctis from Final Fantasy XV. YUI conducted a make-up workshop during the event to share her on point make up skills.

Ying Tze was born in Sabah and started cosplaying in 2005. When she isn’t cosplaying, Ying Tze streams her video gaming sessions online for fans to watch. During OK 2017, Ying Tze shared with visitors present about her gaming life. Fans of both the internationally renowned cosplayers were able to meet and greet both of them at the end of both days.

A new highlight for OK 2017 were the specially invited guest artist. Graphic and comic artists Miin, Abam Apam, Jian Goh (creator of Miao & WafuPafu) and Jai (creator of Komik Ronyok) were all invited to be a part of the event where they were able to speak on stage about their art. They each had a turn at a live demo session as well where they showcased their drawings.

Aside from the typical booths selling art and anime merchandise, OK 2017 also featured the fanarts of the OK mascot, Akari and Gao-nyan, that were submitted on Facebook for the theme competition in an exhibit.
